Bribery for the ColdFusion Cookbook (and looking for a grunt or two)

1 Jul 20:59
I'd like to get the ColdFusion Cookbook updated with some ColdFusion 8 submissions. The amount of submissions has trickled down a bit, so consider this my official plea for submissions, and specifically those that cover ColdFusion 8. (Although submissions that don't specifically involve new CF8 features are welcome as well.) As a reminder, Cookbook questions shouldn't be "How do I make my app work", but good generic questions that could appeal to a broader audience.

Does your form validation need to be less strict?

I ran across an interesting issue with gmail this morning. I was logging into my Broadchoice hosted mail account. Those of you who use Gmail for your hosted mail know that the form looks something like so: Username: input text field here @broadc...

ColdFusion Bloggers code update

1 Jul 06:06
A reader asked if I ever updated the downloadable code version of ColdFusionBloggers.org. I had not done that in quite some time, so today I repackaged up the zip and uploaded. I also fixed the SQL script to include all the latest tables. The code isn't that exciting, but folks can pick apart my jQuery usage and laugh if they want!

Ask a Jedi: jQuery versus Spry...

28 Jun 23:59
Michael asks: I'm hoping you can give me some good Jedi counsel on this one. My question is, should I learn jQuery or Spry? To my inexperienced eye these appear to be competing technologies; if they aren't and I'm comparing apples to oranges...

Second beta of Railo 3 out

27 Jun 21:08
Just read this on the Railo 3 listserv. The second beta is out. A few new features were added, including the shorthand array/struct support CF8 has and cfdocument/cfpdf support. One really interesting update is the ability to specify where unscoped variables go in a UDF. Consider this example: function doit(y) { x = 2; return x*y; } #doit(5)# As you can see, I have an unscoped X variable. When I dump the Variables scope, I see doit and X. However, I can now jump into the Railo Admin...

Ask a Jedi: Question on DBA's and their plans to ruin our lives...

26 Jun 22:39
Ok, so maybe DBAs really aren't out to get us, but I know from time to time I've butted heads with a few DBAs and I'm sure others have as well. Here is an interesting story from someone dealing with something similar.

MAX Website up, Sessions Listed (including mine)

26 Jun 02:25
A new site for MAX has been launched: http://max.adobe.com/na/experience. The stuff in the background is a bit too cute for me, and frankly, I'm really tired of auto-play video. It's so fun when you load a site while you are on the phone and have to ...

Ask a Jedi: Complex security possible in ColdFusion?

24 Jun 06:03
Michael asks: We are inheriting a ColdFusion application written in ColdFusion. This application is be modified by us to conform to our business process. Our current application is written in PowerBuilder. The crux of the question is it possible to implement complex security. By complex each page needs to have business rules to a specific user/role. IE some users will need to be allowed to perform a specific function some not. Some will need to see certain parts of the page some not.

Sunday Mega Media Review

22 Jun 20:57
I've been meaning to post a few quick reviews and as I've got nothing to do until I board my plane, I thought I'd take the time and share some. The Incredible Hulk - I saw this last night with some friends at CFUNITED. While not as good as Iron M...
